Historical record
Since 1997, the Mediterranean Regulatory Authorities Network meets regularly on issues regarding audiovisual regulation. The Mediterranean Regulatory Authorities Network was created on a proposal by the French Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel and the Consell de l'Audiovisual de Catalunya in Barcelona on the 29th of November, 1997, in order to strengthen the historical and cultural links between Mediterranean countries, and to give the opportunity to the independent regulatory authorities from the Mediterranean area to identify, in the background of globalization, the common challenges they have to face.
This initiative aims at establishing a framework for discussion and consistent exchanges of information and research on topics related to audiovisual regulation. The members meet once a year on the invitation of one of the Regulatory Authority part of the Network. The presidency of the Network is ensured on a rotating basis for one year by the Authority organizing the annual meeting.
The five founders of the Network are: the Consell de l’Audiovisual de Catalunya (CAC), the Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel (CSA) of France, The National Council for Radio and Television (NCRTV) of Greece, the Autorità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni (AGCOM) of Italy, and the Alta Autoridade para a Comunicaçaõ Social (AACS) of Portugal.
Its founding Charter states that the Network shall be open to any independent regulatory authority from the Mediterranean area willing to participate in its exchanges.
